Embracing Changes of Times and Environment and Working in Concert to Chase Dreams

On 25 March, Fok Kai Man, member of the Standing Committee of CPPCC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, vice chairperson of Beijing Youth Federation, and vice president of Fok Ying Tung Group, delivered a keynote speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is the full text of the speech.

Excellencies,

Distinguished guests,

Dear young friends,

I am Fok Kai Man. I am very happy to be able to participate in this Asia Youth Leaders Forum today. This gives me the opportunity to learn from young elites from Asia in such different fields as science and technology, finance, and culture. I also thank the hosts for building a new platform for mutual exchange, self-improvement, and win-win cooperation. I would like to take this opportunity to share three views around how youth in the Greater Bay Area should embrace the changes of the times and the environment, forge ahead in unity, and pursue our dreams. I’d like to leave them here for discussion and as an encouragement.

First, young people in the Greater Bay Area should cultivate long-term visions. There are more than 40 countries in Asia, accounting for nearly 60% of the global population and half of the world economy. Sharing development opportunities, seeking win-win cooperation, and creating a better future are the common aspirations of the people of Asia. Today, the world is full of complicated developments. Only by working together can the people of Asia better cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recession, climate change, and future crises and challenges.

In this critical period of the new round of national reform and opening-up, President Xi Jinping personally planned, deployed, and promoted the national strategy of developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Data show that the economic volume of the Greater Bay Area grew to 13 trillion yuan at the end of last year. This is the result of far-sighted planning by President Xi Jinping and generations of people of the Greater Bay Area.

I think the new generation of youth should learn from this looking beyond the present when pursuing our cause. In particular, we should look through strategic and foresighted lenses to see how the focus of global economic development shifting to Asia is impacting the world, to see the trend of China’s peaceful rise, and to see the unique role of the Greater Bay Area in linking global exchanges and cooperation. If we can truly set our eye on the world while keeping our country in mind, there will then be a broader stage and development space for us.

Second, young people in the Greater Bay Area should nurture a broad mind. As the saying goes, "Mount Tai did not refuse soils, so it became great; rivers and seas did not reject streams, so they became deep.” The “one country, two systems” principle allows different social systems and ideologies to coexist in a country on a long term. This is in itself an act of great political tolerance. Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland all belong to the motherland. They are a community with a shared future.

We should continue to open up to Asia and the world with an open and inclusive attitude, attracting capital, talents, technologies, and cultures from all over the world. This is conducive to maintaining the role of Hong Kong and Macao as an important link between China and the world, and an important platform for China to go global and the world to enter China. Further development of the Greater Bay Area will inevitably be accompanied by deeper integration with other emerging economies in Asia and greater openness to the world.

Third, young people in the Greater Bay Area should nourish a self-improvement mentality. The 20th CPC National Congress has sounded the clarion call to comprehensively promote the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with Chinese modernization. This has created a broad stage and bright prospects for our young friends to make a name and pursue our dreams.

Young people are both beneficiaries and important supporters of peace and development. Only through self-improvement can we ultimately march towards success. As a young person from Hong Kong, I have always been with you to promote the integrated development of the Greater Bay Area, and have been actively engaged in our Group’s development projects in Nansha.

Nansha is a place of various national strategies. It carries the high expectations of the state, the province, and the municipality. We hope that by giving full play to the pioneering role of the Nansha Free Trade Zone, we will take the lead in liberalizing trade in services, attract more Hong Kong, Macao, and international capital, technologies, and talents into the mainland, and promote the development of Guangzhou Nansha into a future- and globally-oriented modern coastal new town.

At the same time, we are studying the alignment of Nansha’s development with national strategies. We are designing international education that targets countries along the Belt and Road to promote people-to-people bonds and enlarge the reserve of young international professionals in the Greater Bay Area. We are also discussing with relevant Hong Kong institutions to carry out professional skills training for youth and mobilizing Nansha companies to serve as internship destinations for Hong Kong and Macao students, to supply more talents to the Greater Bay Area.

As the gateway for China’s opening-up, the Greater Bay Area is an excellent platform for young people across the world to make an innovation, start a business, find a job, and share development opportunities. Here, I sincerely invite you all to the Greater Bay Area to chase and realize your dreams.

Dear friends,

The times has always entrusted historic responsibilities to youth. We are living in a great new era in which China and the world is developing and progressing in sync. I would like to join our fellow youth in inheriting the endeavors and responsibilities of the previous generation and embarking with joy on this glory- and dreams-filled journey. Let us be the go-getters, trailblazers, and contributors on this new journey of the new era and commit our youthful efforts to building a united, developed, prosperous Asia. Thank you.
